For the Sundays where nothing is childproofed, there is nothing to play with, and you spend the whole visit two steps behind them.
Fits in a bag · No batteries · Nothing that gets lost in someone else's house
Updated August 2026
We go to my mom's most Sundays. For about a year, I dreaded it.
Her house is lovely and it is not built for a two year old. The good bowls are at toddler height, there is one basket of toys my brother and I used in 1994, and within ten minutes of arriving my son had worked through all of it and moved on to the bookshelf. I would spend the entire visit two steps behind him. I never once finished a coffee while it was hot.
The thing that fixed it was not a bigger toy. It was keeping the right small ones in the bag, permanently, so I never had to remember them.
Four rules for what earns a place in that bag. It has to fit without me carrying a second one. It cannot need batteries, because I am not troubleshooting a toy in my mom's living room. Nothing can detach and vanish under a sofa that is not mine. And it has to hold him long enough that I get an actual conversation with my own mom.
These are the seven that stayed in.
The toys that work at somebody else's house are not the exciting ones. They are the ones that survive being unpacked in a strange room and still give a child something to fail at.

"The Montessori busy board was a huge hit on our 7 hour plane ride to Switzerland!!!! Kept my 9 month old entertained and I know it’s a toy he’ll use in a new ways as he’s older too!"

"I packed these blocks for a long car ride. The numbers and animals are fun to explore. They work well for simple stacking games. It turned out to be a really useful baby toy."

"I purchased these for my granddaughter and she loves them! My daughter said that it is the gift that keeps on giving. She is fascinated by the little characters and she found her feet! We are so proud that she can put her foot in her mouth (like the rest of the family). Of all the gifts that we have bestowed on her, this is her favorite!"

None of this is about the toy being impressive. It is about him being able to get stuck into something without me sitting down beside him, in a room I did not childproof.
Most orders arrive in about a week, so if you have a visit coming up, give yourself that week rather than ordering the night before. There is a 30-day trial if it turns out not to be right.
If I were only putting one thing in the bag it would be the Busy Board. It covers the widest age range here by a distance, nothing falls off it, and it is the only one that works for a baby on a lap and a four year old at the table on the same afternoon.
